CREATIVE WRITING COURSE
“The Fear of Writing Online Course:
Your passport to fun!”
“Oh Milli! Your wonderful feedback is great medicine. Both you and Lois have
'raised me up' during this crazy journey I've started and you guys rock!”
—Steve Gillians, Georgetown, Ontario
WHAT TYPE OF WRITER has taken our creative writing course?
- An editor and technical writer who felt she'd lost touch with her creativity and spontaneity
- A lyrical dreamer from Santa Fe who feared her writing style did not fit in
- A prolific writer and world traveler, now a published children's author, who was the veteran of countless writing classes and workshops but still had a fear of finishing

- A court clerk from California who had taken creative writing courses before but had been deeply wounded by careless comments disguised as “constructive criticism”
- A self-employed father of three who—after receiving a scathing and punitive rejection letter from an editor—was looking for a way to free himself from the demon of writer's block
- An admin assistant in a non-profit organization looking for, in her own words, “ . . . a dose of catnip to stir my senses and unhinge the wildness waiting within”
Many creative writing courses teach you the practical craft of writing and educate you on how to navigate the publishing world. We do not profess to be experts in that field. Instead, this course provides a healing balm for fresh writing wounds and old scars or blocks—packaged with cheers and fun.
You'll effortlessly learn to write short stories, anecdotes, story outlines, a book review, a fun interview, and quotable quotes . . . all without the blahs of manuscript formatting or the terrors of word count.
Oh, by the way. If you've been longing to write but never quite had the nerve the start, then this course is the ticket to adventure you've been waiting for.
“Thank you for the neat feedback. You are so good at noticing every nuance! You're the perfect writing mentor to have because everything you say is geared to inspire a writer to go on!!”
—Catherine Greti, San Francisco, California“Milli, as usual your feedback was profound to me. I laugh and I cry when I read it. And most importantly I am SO encouraged. Thank you. I loved when you pointed out that when I thought I was lounging (writing) I was actually WORKING. This was an eye-opener, and pointed out to me once again that this is what I need to be doing.”

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Fear of Writing: Where No Fun Has Gone Before!
“I am so on fire! I’ll try not to inundate you with my assignments, but I’m having so much fun with your course that it's hard to stop myself. I feel so safe in this course already—that is a treat to me! I am healing slowly and courses like these are rebuilding my hope. I always think of new writers as gentle reeds . . . easily damaged if bent too far.”
—Claudia Errington, Woodland, California
What antidote does our course offer for the fear of writing malady?
The Fear of Writing Online Creative Writing Course is about having fun and gently healing old writing scars. It's also about establishing (or re-establishing) that you ARE a writer and learning how to write on a regular basis.
Our course contains specific elements designed to make this happen over a period of eight weeks:
- 18 assignments designed to liberate the imagination and your powers of expression.
- A safe environment in which to unfold shaky writing wings. (As a woman who attended the Fear of Writing Clinic in Fort Collins, Colorado, said, while waving the brochure that convinced her to attend: “It screams safe!”)
- Opportunities for writers to express their fears without dwelling on them exclusively.
- The chance to write on a regular basis, in a structured but fun environment.
- The chance to hang out with other writers without fear of being critiqued.
- Loving and supportive feedback for all 18 assignments.
- Plenty of positive reinforcement for focusing on creativity, instead of all the usual “shoulds” that go with writing.
- A progression of creative and emotional blossomings that will help you foster greater self-confidence.
- A chance for the writer to see what he/she is really capable of . . . instead of believing the critical voice inside that loves to pound us with goodies like “I'm terrible at writing descriptions” or “I don't have a clue how to write interesting dialogue.”
- The sense of accomplishment and momentum created by doing it—by actually taking the steps to overcome fear of writing.
“Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.”
— Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
OUR ONLINE WRITING COURSE will throw you into the fun pool and get you all wet. You won’t be expected to learn any of the typical tools of the craft—like structure and genre, use of backstory, POV, or how to write a query letter. Instead, you'll experience the wacky and animated Fertile Material writing prompts. You’ll get to do some lazy work, too, such as reading entertaining and inspiring things.
Part of the philosophy of Fear of Writing is to provide a safe place for writers to blossom. Lessons are posted to password-protected student forums where they are thoroughly responded to (in purely supportive ways) by your own personal Course Presenter. The course stresses having fun and letting your imagination go wild, so your posts will never be “critiqued”—only encouraged and applauded. This includes specific input on what you got right.
“I am totally into this course and it's like a self-indulgent treat (in my mind's eye it's like a home-baked cookie or Godiva chocolate) each time I work on the writing assignments. I posted my Active Zone 2 assignment already. Love the positive feedback. Keep it coming!”
—Amy Anderson, Riverside, Rhode Island

small manageable tasks, and then starting on the first one.”

ENROLLMENT PROCESS: AN OVERVIEW
In the next section are the SEVEN STEPS we’ll be taking you through to complete your enrollment in the Fear of Writing Online Course. The seven steps will
(A) help you understand what you'll be committing to;
(B) help you get your money's worth.
Don't worry, you won’t need to remember all these steps. The enrollment process is designed to take the mystery out of it for you, so you'll know what to expect at every point along the way. Anything we can do to minimize the fear is how we operate here at Fear of Writing.
OK, BUT WHY ARE THERE SO MANY STEPS?
The short answer: Our enrollment process eliminates those who are not ready for the commitment required to become a writer.
Before you get too freaked out, allow us to explain. This course has been operating since 2001. Since that time we've had our share of success stories, including students who went on to become published authors. Sadly, we've also seen a procession of students who did not finish the assignments.
We take your writing dreams seriously. You should too. The difference between success and failure in our course is simple: success means you finish the curriculum and graduate, failure means you don't do some or all of the assignments.
(Believe it or not, we've seen people fail to submit even the first assignment. Now you know why we go to lengths to make sure you're ready. And why we have such a black-and-white definition of success and failure.)
Why would anyone be crazy enough to pay good money for a writing course and then fail to do the assignments? Because fear and procrastination can be powerful enemies! We understand this deeply, and we do many things to help you overcome those internal enemies. However, we can't babysit you. We've done that in the past but it took too much of the joy out of the work we do. These days, we expect students to be accountable to their own desire to take this course.
That bears repeating: we expect you to be accountable. We'll give you the tools to make that easier.
If you really want to be a writer, you're going to need that magic ingredient—accountability to your own writing dreams—more than anything. More than writing talent, more than a shelf full of books on how to write. As Woody Allen said, “Eighty per cent of success is showing up.”
The great news? This course will give you a very pleasant way to do that, steeped in plenty of praise and support from us. Our assignments are fun and they *will* liberate you creatively.
Bottom line. If you can't stick out the seven steps of the enrollment process, then you won't have the stick-to-it-ive-ness for 18 assignments. That's why we test your mettle first. Because we only want to work with success stories.
Your creative success (and enjoyment) is our ultimate goal.
“Miraculous things happen to those who consciously choose to overcome their fears.
As they begin to move forward in this new life journey, many find deep, long-lost
feelings of inner strength and renewed self-confidence. They gain certainty in their
skills, abilities and even downfalls. They have the good fortune of learning more
about themselves, their wants, needs and desires, thus opening new doors of
opportunity and enjoyment.”
—Dr. Rita Louise, soulhealer.com
“It’s up to you to make the next move.”

OUR 7-STEP ENROLLMENT PROCESS
We enrol on an individual basis until we reach our maximum (you don't need to wait for a new class or semester to start). We run things based on giving lots of attention to each student.
Current enrollment status:
7/29/10 We have 2 seats available
(You can join our mailing list if
you're not quite ready to enroll.)
A summary of the steps is given here so you'll know what to expect. You'll be guided through each step and you'll always know what to do next. You won't need to remember these steps; a prompter for the next step will be provided each time you need it.

Note that skipping information may result in losing your opportunity to enroll.
Did you read the previous section on why the seven steps are so important?
If not, please click here to read that part before you proceed.
The best way to tackle these steps is to read from 1–7 first. Then come back to Step 1 and take the first action as specified.
Step 1: FAQs
In the FAQs we answer common questions such as, “What kinds of assignments will I be doing?”, “Who will see my assignments?” and “What do you mean by feedback?” We'll explain things such as where you'll be posting your work and what kind of training our Course Presenters undergo, as well as payment details and our extension policy. If you have any questions not covered by the FAQs, you should write us and ask before proceeding.
To activate Step 1, please email us to request the FAQs. Keep your email brief at this point. Please don't tell the story of why you want to enroll—that part comes in Step 4 (letter of application).
When you write to us you'll be contacting the course owner, Milli Thornton. Please provide the following information: first and last name, city, state and country. Please put Requesting FAQs in your email's subject line.
Write to Milli at:
Step 2: The Importance of Pacing + Your Graduation Date
You can read this part in neon lights: we place huge importance on pacing. The reason? Because success as a writer means learning to write on a regular basis. Have you ever had a writing binge? And then suffered a long drought? Our eight-week curriculum is designed to help you break out of those unhealthy habits. More details given in the Step 2 email.
Step 3: Refund Policy
Our refund policy is not a dry legal document; it’s a litmus test for whether you’re ready to commit to finishing this course. If you don't like our refund policy, that lets you know you're not ready. We're not here to sales-talk you into parting with your money. We're here to provide a service to those who seriously want to reap the benefits.
Step 4: Letter of Application
This will be your opportunity to tell us, in your own words, why you want to take this course. You'll receive guidance on how to write that letter a bit further down the page. For now, please continue reading.
Step 5: Enrollment Form
Receiving the enrollment form by email means we've accepted your letter of application. Please complete the enrollment form and return it by email.
Step 6: Firm But Loving Terms of Service
After you've completed everything from the previous five steps, we'll ask you to sign and return the Firm But Loving Terms of Service. It will arrive by email and takes about five minutes to complete. Again, this is not a dry legal document; it's a plainly-worded indication that you understand what you're committing to. It's basically a promise to yourself.
PAYMENT IS REQUIRED AFTER YOU SIGN THE TERMS OF SERVICE. THE FAQs COVER PAYMENT QUESTIONS.
Step 7: The Enrollment Call
A Skype or phone call with Milli to answer any remaining questions you might have.
The call will also give you a real person to be accountable to. Back in the days when we enrolled by email, we noticed that students who weren't doing their assignments would hide behind the anonymity of email and just never answer. After speaking with Milli, you'll know how much we care about each student . . . and that we'll be ringing your phone off the hook if you go missing.
No need to fear this phone contact with Milli. As you can see in the photo, she's a normal human being (not some literary edifice) and she wants to help.
FOR OVERSEAS ENROLLMENT CALLS: Unless you have a way to keep the cost of an international call to a minimum, you'll need to download the Internet calling service known as Skype and plug a microphone into your computer. This will make the call free for you—and you'll probably find you like Skype so much you'll continue to use it to save money on phone calls.
“I've loved your feedback . . . it's
really made me feel good about my writing
and makes me want to write more.”
—Susan Cutts, Avila Beach, CA
THE LETTER OF APPLICATION (aka Step 4)

If you haven't already completed Steps 1–3 above, then you're not yet eligible to apply.
To request enrollment, please email Milli Thornton at her Course Presenter email address below.
Your letter of application should consist of at least two paragraphs (but you can write more than that if you want to). Describe why you want to take this course and why you feel you need this particular course. Don’t be afraid to show us your passion—or your fear.
-----> IMPORTANT NOTE BEFORE YOU WRITE TO MILLI
To increase your chances of being accepted into our course, please read the article Etiquette 101: How to Contact a Writing Website (opens in a new window) and then return to this page to confirm the course owner's name and email address. Thank you.

Meet Some of Our Students
Hi Milli, Not only am I getting my self confidence back, but it is like a burst mains water pipe and the ideas and images are just pouring out. And all I want to do is to write them down. I am very sorry for going too fast and I will make a concerted effort not to run ahead. I have been doing the “passive” assignments as well and had to put brakes on to stop reading too far in advance. Your book is absolutely priceless and I can't wait for the next one.
—Letter from New Zealand student, David Schoeman

Hello Dee, I did it! Yahoo, I did the whole 8 weeks. It was fun and thank you so much for your kind comments. I really procrastinated over the last assignment as I did not want it to end! My sweetie is taking me for Thai dinner and a movie, The Bucket List (very appropriate movie for the final lesson!). Aloha!
—Teresa Thomas, Kailua Kona, Hawai'i

“We're off and racing. You have no idea how excited I am not to have to hide the fear anymore.” —Kimina Lyall, Melbourne, VIC, Australia from the email she sent when submitting her first assignment.
Kimina's book, Out of the Blue: Facing the Tsunami, was released in December, 2006. From the Acknowledgments section of her book:
“Deepest thank yous are owed to [...] Milli Thornton of fearofwriting.com, who flew across the Internet to rescue me from being crushed by a wall of writer's block.”
Read more about Kimina's book, and how Fear of Writing and the online course helped her finish her book, on the FoW Published Authors page (opens in a new window).
FROM 2005, DURING HER (FIRST OF TWO) TIMES TAKING THE COURSE:
“Milli, I love your feedback. You are so encouraging, so uplifting, and your words exude a strength that goes right to my soul. Thank you.” —Claudia Errington, Woodland, California
FROM A GENERAL EMAIL UPDATE, 2008:
“Once again, let me say, I so enjoyed going through the course. It truly was a springboard to get me into the writing world and mode. Especially as I look back now and see from then to present—how much has changed and evolved in my life. Great seeds were planted during that time, some of which are now blooming, some that have been growing steady all along. Very, very cool.” —Claudia

“Declarations of existence excite me. Being isn't always enough. Sometimes I overflow with the desire to describe and share.”
The above quote is from Jayni Wilson Sickler of New Mexico, excerpted from her assignment “I Am a Writer,” Week Four of the Fear of Writing Online Course.
Because she enjoyed it so much, Jayni has done the course twice—once when it was launched in 2001 and again in 2005. Jayni is seen here in Sept. 2005 preparing to do one of her course assignments.

“Dear Milli: Help! I’m an editor and a technical writer and have managed to frighten my inner writer into the depths of a deep, dark, musty coat closet, where she survives on the occasional crust of bread and sip of water. There are characters in my head—I fall asleep thinking about them every night lately—and I have an idea for a world that I’m really enthusiastic about, but all of it is flat as a pancake when I try to write about it. I’m so frustrated! May I please take your class? Thanks!” —Beth Brooks, Senior Editor & President, Paraphrase, Inc., Clinton, New Jersey

“I am so very pleased that I found your Website and your course. I find myself dreading the day when I complete my eighth week in the program. The process of reading and responding, feeding my imagination and filling up pages has become integral to my daily routine. I will certainly miss these daily activities.” —Walt Nickell, Celina, Ohio, seen here with his youngest son, Ben, age 7

Milli runs local writing circles based on the 112 writing prompts in her book—known as the Fertile Material—and her mission is to put the fun back into writing.
She was born in Wallace, Idaho and spent her childhood in Great Falls, Montana. At the tender age of 12, she moved to Australia with part of her large family. COURSE PRESENTERS
All Course Presenters are currently undergoing extensive retraining.
We also have a batch of new trainees. Hopefully, by fall of 2010 we'll be able to handle more students at once.
COURSE DESIGNER, JENNIFER TURNER
JENNIFER TURNER AKA J. R. TURNER is a special figurehead at Fear of Writing. She has acted as both editor of the newsletter and moderator of the chat room (2001 - 2002) and was the first course presenter when we launched the Fear of Writing Online Course in September 2001.
Using Milli Thornton's book (Fear of Writing: for writers & closet writers) as her template, Jenny modeled the course on the humorous and philosophical prose, short stories, and writing prompts contained in the the book. In this way the book becomes a student manual, to be thoroughly explored in eight weekly segments.
Jenny did a brilliant job interpreting the book into weekly lessons, and Milli will always be proud to count J. R. Turner as a tremendous asset to Fear of Writing. Jenny's now busy with her own books—Stark Knight, Silent Knight, Good Knight, The Knight Before, Bulletproof Bride and My Biker Bodyguard—but she will long be remembered around these parts.
NEWFLASH—HALLOWEEN 2008: Jenny's latest book, DFF: Dead Friends Forever, is written for young adults and marks Jenny's entry into the horror genre. Watch the thrilling, spine-tingling trailer at Jenny's official Website: J. R. Turner.

Student Newsletter
“INNER DOGGIE” NEWS
MARCH 2008—Milli started the student newsletter in February 2008 without a name. As she explained in the first issue, “I normally enjoy coming up with juicy titles, but I haven't been able to figure out a good name for this newsletter. So I'm throwing it out to all of you. Get those phenomenal imaginations going and crank out some ideas for me to consider. You're welcome to send as many title suggestions as you like. Treating it as a brainstorming session and scribbling down everything that comes to you may be just the 'Eureka!' I'm looking for.”
After some extra encouragement, students entered into the spirit of the contest and sent Milli their lists of ideas. “I thoroughly enjoyed experiencing these brainstorms,” she said. “They were all so fun and creative!”
CONTEST WINNER: JAY NORMAN, DENTON, TEXAS
Jay's entry of five title suggestions came in marked with this modest note: “Just a few I worked up. I'm not real pleased with any of them (except the Wayward Writer's Weekly) but they were ideas, so I thought I'd put them down (see how well you've taught me!).—Jay”
As soon as Milli laid eyes on The Inner Doggie News, she knew this was the title she was looking for. With slight adjustments, it became “Inner Doggie” News and was added to the title banner for the newsletter.
The name has significance for students of the Online Course beyond just the dog from the cover of the book. In three words, Jay nailed the underlying spirit of the course—as well as giving a big nod to a key assignment from Week One.
Jay is pictured on vacation in 2006 in Flaming Gorge National Park, Utah. Ironically, he's wearing a sweatshirt that features what can only be described as a 'dawg' with a bone in its mouth. When Milli asked him about it, Jay said, “I didn't even think about the dawg on the shirt. One of my brothers used to work at a bar called 'The Bone' and the picture was their mascot. It is fitting, isn't it!”
Jay's prize was this permanent Web feature as the inventor of the title, along with a $25 Starbucks Card.
THE RUNNER UP: DAVID SCHOEMAN, DUNEDIN, NEW ZEALAND
David's free-wheeling entry of six ideas also captured Milli's fancy.
“David really allowed himself to go for broke and write down anything that came,” she said. “His suggestion, Scriptophobia: Provider of Medication & Treatment, was so entertaining to me I just had to choose it as the runner-up—even though I had not originally intended to create a runner-up category.”
